How we started
Having grown up on the Island, Dan attend Ryde High School before graduating from Bristol University in 2005. After graduation, he joined a mixed veterinary practice in Wiltshire, where he worked for a few years before returning to the Island with his wife, Kirsty who just happened to be a veterinary nurse!
After working in a few practices on the Island as a small animal vet, Dan continued to feel that there was something missing. He yearned for a work-life balance that meant he could spend more time with his young family but still provide a caring professional service to local pets.
The idea of providing a mobile veterinary surgery with his wife was born and after much hard work the business launched in May 2013 and has developed in to what you see today. Dan is passionate about providing island residents with a professional, affordable and personalised service brought right to your door.
"The concept of a mobile vet that provides ALL the services a traditional vet does was brand new to the UK. There are several vets that drive around providing basic in house services, but the Mobile Vet is something else entirely. It's a great way to encompass convenience with a traditional twist whilst maintaining the highest veterinary standards with state of the art equipment contained within a mobile unit! A lot of independant veterinary practices are being purchased by corporate giants and the personal one to one care is slipping by the way side. Some establishments have lost touch with what being a vet is really about – CARING for the animals. Although modern day practice is a far cry from the days of James Herriot pottering around the english countryside, with todays technology it is now possible to provide a mobile veterinary service - so why not?"
Kirsty's background was initially in media and graphic design until personal circumstances lead her to reflect on what she really wanted to do in life. Kirsty dreamt of pursuing a career in caring for animals. So she began a rigorous training course in veterinary nursing at a veterinary hospital in the Cotswolds. It was not long before she qualified as a veterinary nurse.
Kirsty aims to provide excellent care for all animals and she loves the personal touch and providing the TLC that’s required. Kirsty obtained additional qualifications to better herself and registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons so you can be confident that your pets are under the very best of care when in her hands.
September 2013 - National award
After only six months in business, The Mobile Vet was nominated for the Ready for Business Awards. Kirsty and Dan travelled to the Houses of Parliament for the National Finals where we competed against other Regional finalists for the best National start up business to consumer business of 2013 and were announced winners!
The Mobile Vet has only been in action for 6 months now and to even be recognised and nominated for an award was mind blowing. We felt blessed to have had such a great reception from the Island residents since opening, but this really is the icing on the cake and reflected our willingness to provide the best service that we could for our clients.
February 2014 - National award
Following on for the Ready for Business award, in February we were one of the fifty finalists at the Everline Future 50 Awards which are awarded to groundbreaking small businesses who find innovative new ways of doing business. Dan and Kirsty, once again, travelled up to London for the awards ceremony hosted by comedian Seann Walsh.
November 2014 - Central surgery opens its doors
Through the support of all our clients we were fortunate enough to receive the IW Chamber of Commerce Business Awards for Excellence - Young Entrepreneur Award - we were quite pleased with the "young" part! By the end of 2014, the practice was doing well and so busy that Dan and Kirsty decided to open our central surgery in Newport as it was more convenient for some clients. Jackie, our lovely receptionist started at the practice with only the bare essentials - a telephone, laptop and kettle!
May 2015 - John joins the Practice
The following year started well with more clients joining the practice. It got so busy that in May, vet John started working with Dan and Kirsty. John was eager to provide a high standard of care and a compassionate service to his patients. It also allowed him to spend more time with his young family and he enjoyed being out on the road again in the mobile surgery.
November 2015 - Winner of national award
The year ended well when we beat off stiff competition to win Micro-Business of the Year at the 2015 Growing Business Awards in London. Special thanks to Kirsty's brother Andy who collected the award on our behalf and he delivered a sterling impromptu speech!
April 2016 - Winner of the Queen's Award for Enterprise in Innovation
As the Mobile Vet approached its third year since launch, Dan and Kirsty were very proud to have had bestowed upon them a Queens Award for Enterprise in Innovation - our greatest achievement to date!
"I am delighted to inform you that Her Majesty The Queen has been graciously pleased to approve the Prime Minister's recommendation that your organisation should receive a Queen's Award for Enterprise in Innovation this year."
Her majesty announced the business win on her 90th birthday on 21st April. Kirsty and Dan were invited to Buckingham Palace in July for an official reception and to meet the Queen herself.
We had been fortunate enough to receive excellent feedback from our clients and enjoy an immense amount of job satisfaction with the way we work. A nod from her majesty is truly the crowning glory for our business. It just goes to show what can be achieved with exceptional hard work and effort and the love and support of family, friends and a formidable staff. This award is for all these people that help to make our business great!"
Kirsty spent hours looking for a dress and Dan spend hours brushing up on his royal etiquette!"
May 2016 - Bettina joins the Practice
Following on from the Queens Award, we needed another vet to meet growing demand for our services. Bettina had moved to the Island with her husband in 2010 and had several positions before starting part-time with us in May. Orinally from Germany, she loves the Island especially walking her dogs and horse riding.
November 2017 - Gillian joins the Practice
2016 continued to get busier as did 2017. With more clients registering we now needed another part-time vet to continue providing the very best care. In November, Gillian joined the team keen to provide a personal, caring service whilst being able to spend a little extra time with her family.
March 2018 - Best Mobile Vet Award
The Mobile Vet was crowned Best Mobile Vet Practice in the Best UK Vet 2018 Awards, after achieving the most top-rated client reviews over the past 12 months in this category. Many veterinary practices across the UK had been taking part, encouraging pet-owners to leave reviews. With over one hundred four and five star reviews, the award reflects our dedication to customer service and outstanding care. Comments left by happy clients included ‘The Mobile Vet always gives above and beyond expected care’, ‘An amazing company with the most caring vets you could wish for’ and ‘With no transport ourselves to reach a vet, the mobile vet service brings peace of mind’.
Unsurprisingly, we were thrilled with the result and delighted to receive this award. Exceptional customer service is our driving force and achieving recognition for it highlights our dedication and hard work to receive such great feedback from our clients.
September 2018 - Paul joins the Practice
Paul joined us as our new practice manager, freeing Dan from being shackled to the desk and returning to veterinary work. Paul was dropped in at the deep end and looked forward to improving the practice even further!
March 2019 - Best Mobile Vet Award
The Mobile Vet was again crowned Best Mobile Vet Practice in the Best UK Vet 2019 Awards for the second year running. Obviously we were overjoyed to have won the award for the second year running with nearly two hundred four and five star reviews, the award reflects our continuing commitment and outstanding patient care.
2019 - Three more vets join the Practice and more...
This year has been as busy as ever. We've been welcoming more new clients and have also welcomed three new vets - Rachel started in January, following Victoria's return to South Africa. Rachel started with us as a locum and loved it so much that she decided to stay. She lives in Southampton and commutes over each day on her electric bike. Denis also started in January and Maliha started in March, planning to be with us for only a short time - however, I believe that she's loved the Island so much that she's now planning to stay too!
This year promises to be as busy as ever. Other exciting developments are also being planned so keep an eye on our Facebook page for the latest updates...
